POP QUIZ: CONNECTIONS (answers)
Congratulations to Rob W, who scored a well-connected 6/10. Nice job!
I’m not going to re-post all the pics. They are here if you want a second look.
1) JAMES BOND
(Four men who have all portrayed the iconic spy. Bob Holness, in a 1965 radio adaptation of ‘Moonraker’, aired in South Africa. Barry Nelson, the first to portray James Bond, as CIA Agent ‘Jimmy Bond’ in a 1954 Made-for-TV adaptation of Casino Royale. Sean Connery (of course) and David Niven, in 1967’s spoof of ‘Casino Royale’.)
(All of these food brands, and many others, are owned by the Pepsi corporation.)
3) SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC
(Crab : Cancer, Ram : Aries, Lion : Leo, Bull : Taurus)
4) LOS ANGELES SPORTS TEAMS
(L.A. Clippers of the NBA and a Clipper Ship, L.A. Kings of the NHL and ‘We Three Kings’ from the Christmas carol, The L.A. Angels Of Anaheim of MLB and some angels, and the L.A. Galaxy of MLS and the Milky Way Galaxy)
5) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTERS ON PAPER NOTES
(Somewhat youthful photos of Wilfred Laurier ($5), John A Macdonald ($10), William Lyon Mackenzie King ($50) and Robert Laird Borden ($100))
6) MISSING, PRESUMED DEAD
(Four people who have disappeared in mysterious circumstances, and never been found. Jimmy Hoffa, ’60s US Union boss, long suspected to be the victim of a mob hit, Amelia Earhart, pioneering female pilot whose plane went off the grid and was never recovered, the man known as ‘DB Cooper’ who hijacked a plane and parachuted out with $200,000 in ransom never to be found, and Lord Lucan who vanished without a trace while still a suspect in the murder of his children’s nanny. FUN FACT: Lord Lucan was once considered for the role of James Bond.)
7) THE FIRST FOUR ISLAND RESORTS MENTIONED IN “KOKOMO” BY THE BEACH BOYS
(Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda Bahamas. ‘Kokomo’ by the way, is made up. You can’t go there. If a Beach Boy says he wants to take you there, he’s lying, call a cop))
8) COUNTRIES WHICH BORDER ITALY
(The flags of Switzerland, France, Slovenia and Austria)
9) PEOPLE NICKNAMED COCO
(Conan O’Brien, whose fans started calling him Coco after he was booted off the Tonight Show, Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel, fashion maven, Nicole “Coco” Austin, actress, model and wife of rapper Ice T, and Canadian fashion model Mikhaila “Coco” Rocha)
10) SUBWAY STOPS ON THE BLOOR LINE (TORONTO TRANSIT SUBWAY STOPS)
(Author Rudyard KIPLING, actor Thomas JANE, New Jersey Governor Chris CHRISTIE, and ST GEORGE)
That last one was very Toronto-centric, so I apologize to out-of-towners and weird foreign people. I liked that one, though. Imagining that Rudyard Kipling and Chris Christie are somehow connected amuses me.
I’ve never heard the Bob Holness ‘Moonraker’, but I have seen the Barry Nelson ‘Casino Royale’. It was live TV, as part of CBS Climax Mystery Theatre. There’s a kinescope recording of it included as an extra on the DVD of the David Niven film. There are some big liberties, and the plot is very abbreviated but all in all it’s not terrible. Peter Lorre plays the villain, Le Chifre, and is very good in it. (Hey look, it’s on Youtube)
