POP QUIZ: MONDEGREENS (answers)

Big congratulations this week to Todd McG, who scored a whopping 28/30. Todd got all the titles and artists correct, and only missed the corrected lyrics on two tracks (for which he supplied perfectly acceptable alternate mondegreens). Way to go, Todd.

1) “and there’s a wino down the road, I should have stolen Oreos”
2) “I sometimes wish I’d never been boiled in oil”
3) “last night I dreamt of some bagels”
4) “Take your pants down, and make it happen”
5) “The girl with colitis goes by”
6) “Big ole Jed had a light on”
7) “I’m a pool hall ace”
8) “‘Scuse me, while I kiss this guy”
9) “It doesn’t make a difference if we’re naked or not”
10) “My pony plays the mamba”

1) “and as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our souls” from ‘Stairway To Heaven’ by Led Zeppelin
2) “sometimes wish I’d never been born at all” from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen
3) “last night I dreamt of San Pedro” from ‘La Isla Bonito’ by Madonna
4) “Take your passion and make it happen” from ‘Flashdance’ by Irene Cara
5) “The girl with kaleidoscope eyes” from “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” by the Beatles
6) “Big old jet airliner” from ‘Jet Airliner’ by the Steve Miller Band
7) “How my poor heart aches” from ‘Every Breath You Take’ by The Police
8) “‘Scuse me, while I kiss the sky” from ‘Purple Haze’ by Jimi Hendrix
9) “It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not” from ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ by Bon Jovi
10) “Marconi plays the mamba” from ‘We Built This City” by Starship

That last one is interesting. I’ve checked several online lyric sites, and they’re about evenly split between ‘mamba’ and ‘mambo’. It REALLY sounds like ‘mamba’. But, a mambo is a dance. A mamba is a snake, so mambo makes more sense. Either they used the wrong word – it was written by Bernie Taupin, no less – or their enunciation is TERRIBLE. I still love the lyric “knee deep in the hoopla” though.

When I was a kid, I thought that Johnny Nash was singing ‘I can see clearly now the rain has gone, I can see all the popsicles in my way’. I had no idea why my older siblings found that funny.

Thanks,
QM Bill
